Dangerous or Smooth Fall Planting Time

A few bulbs had arrived in the mail this week and I had purchased a few on sale at Manard’s so yesterday was bulb planting day. With the threat of more rain and a few days of very cool weather that is threatening frost and freeze warnings already it prompted me into getting out the shovel and get them into the ground.

Fall_2011

At this time of the year when it is time to plant bulbs and Fall flowers the ground is usually dry and hard as a brick. I love the seeing new flowers in Spring but dreaded trying to get them planted because of the hard clay soil. I almost burned up my drill last Fall trying to get the auger to drill into the hard ground.
Not very good ground for planting and for bulbs around here in the hills. It is the stuff they use to use to fill the cracks between the logs on houses. I am talking adobe and not the program. Since I am not rich and cannot amend all of the soil  I deal with it the best I can and hope the flowers will find a way to survive as well.
After all of the rain we have had this year it was so nice to just take the shovel and to be able to dig into the rain softened soil.
For once bulb planting was not an all out battle with a drill and auger bearing all of my weight behind them, smoke filling the air and the smell of a burning motor from the drill. And I have a lot of weight to throw behind them. I did not even have the aggravation of the auger catching on that one root that happens to be just where I wanted to plant that bulb. You know that one. Yes we all have them. That root that throws off that perfect pattern you had in mind for Spring blooms. I did not even go around muttering to myself. Well, to tell the truth I do that anyway and hope that no one catches me at it.  I did not have to use the  mattock or one stick of dynamite. Okay now I am exaggerating  at tad but dynamite has entered my mind on some occasions. Here in the hills it should be included in all gardening kits for Fall planting time.
No, it was a good day to plant bulbs.

Allium_MixGiants Allium_PersianBlue
Some of the bulbs that were gently put into the ground were:
Hot Pants, Apeldoorm and Carrousel tulips.
Also a mix of Purple Sensation, aflatunense and nigrum Alliums. And some Persian Blue Alliums were planted in the new corner bed. Got to have blue ones in your garden!
I planted a mixture of new Crocus blubs. It has been years since I have had Crocus blooms in the Spring.
Do not tell the squirrels I planted bulbs of Hyacinth’s named  “Gipsy Queen” and “Minos” which were planted to replace some of the Hyacinths that have started to get smaller and smaller blooms each year.
They have not dug up the new irises lately so maybe these bulbs will escape. This year  planting them without the smoking drill and except for the occasional comment out loud to self all went quietly.
Just maybe the squirrels did not see me at it also. I heard no squawking in the woods from the pesky varmints.
I also planted some English Bluebells in the shade garden.
More blue! They will be a welcome addition next Spring.
And the last bulbs were of the new “Centhannes” Daffodils.

Echinacea_DoubleScoopRaspberry
Not all that was planted yesterday were bulbs but a few new plants were also added.
To the corner bed  I added two new Double Scoop Raspberry Echinacea's.
Also some Blue Boy and Blue Ice tall phlox were planted.
Some new lilies have also been added to the garden beds.
I also moved a few plants around yesterday so it was a busy day in the garden.  More moving of plants you say. I know not new news when it comes to my garden. I need a sign to put into the garden that says “Lona drop that shovel”.
The vertigo has disappeared much faster this time around by the way so I never fell over on my head or that other end once.
So it is a good day spent in the gardening doing what you like most when you do not get grass stains on your derriere.

Lily_Dizzy2
This is one of the new lilies I added to the Woodland bed in August.
The “Dizzy” daylily (not Lona)  I received from American Meadows grew fast and is starting to bloom.

Lily_Dizzy They well be completely open now. I love having a new lily in bloom now and I also saw in the Woodland bed that one of the reblooming Irises “Blue Swede Shoes” is about to bloom. I will share the pictures when it blooms.

Moonvine_Bloom The Moonvine bloom is ready to open (yah!) and I have my eye on it. Maybe tonight?
There are a few new plants that are still coming in the mail to be planted but all of the bulbs are in the ground for this Fall.
Putting in new bulbs and planning for next Spring makes me happy and gives me something to look forward to after the long winters.
Are you planting new bulbs this Fall? Any new plans being made and plants going into the ground ?
Gardeners are a hopeful lot and live season to season.

Happy Gardening Everyone,
Lona

Caryopteris Blue Mist Shrub “First Choice”

Caryopteris_Bumblebee

I love the blue color of the blooms in late Summer and early Fall but the bees just love the blooms period.

September’s Last Blooms

Today is a rainy day here in the hills. I cannot believe that September is all but gone. The leaves on the trees are starting to change colors and with all of the rain they should be beautiful this year if we can get some sun.
I took a very slow walk around the garden yesterday morning since I am still having a little vertigo. The garden was looking a little dismal.

CrimsonRed_Sept26
Crimson Bouquet
The roses still have a few blooms  here and there but the black spot has been so bad and their leaves are all turning yellow and falling off, but I will enjoy these last roses of summer.

Anemones_Sept26 The Charlotte Anemone just keeps on blooming and the blooms are so welcome this time of the year.

LuckyStar_Echinacea_Sept26 The Lucky Star Echinacea decided to put on one small lone bloom. It has been such a heavy bloomer amongst the Echinacea's this year.

ToadLily_Sept26
The Toad Lilies are still blooming away.

FoxGlove_Sept26
A few of the Foxgloves are putting on a few little blooms here at the beginning of Fall.

BlueHill_Salvia_Sept26 I keep cutting off the Blue Hill Salvia and it keeps giving me some blooms.

The vertigo is leaving faster this time and I am so glad of it. Thanks for your concerns and prayers.

“Chocolate” Eupatorium White Snakeroot

Eupatorium_Chocolate Eupatorium rugosum “Chocolate” White Snakeroot

Deep purple or Chocolate leaves and shiny deep burgundy stems make a wonderful contrast to the profusions of white blooms that bloom from September into October from the “Chocolate” White Snakeroot in the garden.

Eupatorium_rugosum_Chocolate_WhiteSnakeroot

I have mine planted together with Margarette Anemones which bloom at the same time. The pink blooms from the anemones go well with the dark foliage of the Snakeroot behind them and both are wonderful for late Summer to Fall blooming.

Anemone_JoePye Snakeroot likes moist well drained alkaline soil. It grows best in part shade and direct sun causes the leaves to scorch. I have found that here the leaf miners love my plants.
Reaching a height of between 3 and 4 feet its bushy growth with strong upright stems planted at the end of a bed is beautiful from all sides.
It makes a good cut flower and the Butterflies love it.
Snakeroot is hardy in zones from 4 to 8.
Mine has had some self sowing from the seeds which produced a few plants that I have just transplanted into my daughters flower garden.

Margaret_CSnakeroot

A warning :
The plant can be toxic to people and animals. Dairy cows that eat the native form of Snakeroot plants that contain toxins can then  be passed to people through raw milk. It was called Milk Sickness by the settlers and farmers.
So as with other toxic flowers Chocolate Snakeroot should be used wisely in a garden.

Margaret_Snakeroot_1
I am fighting another bout of vertigo which took me to the emergency room this morning. Hopefully this time it will not last a month like a previous bout. I have too much to do in the garden this time of the year with moves, new plantings and bulbs coming in the mail. My daughter and I have made plans for a few outings to some upcoming festivals too.
Besides it is no fun feeling like an old drunk person who has not had a drop to drink. LOL!

 Gruss_An_Aachen_AF_Sept19
I had to throw in a picture or two of the Gruss an Aachen roses that are blooming so pretty now.
Does that beetle know it is being stalked? LOL!

Goings On in The Garden

Good morning everyone.
Yesterday was a rainy day here in the hills.  I was glad to hear that Texas got some much needed rain over the weekend.
On the morning stroll around the yard to see what was still in bloom I heard some little meow’s in the Rose Garden.

Kittens_Flowerbed With all of the feral cats around here my garden beds have become a favorite place to hide new born kittens. I usually find a litter in the Spring and one in the Fall. This is the new Fall litter. One coal black one and another one that has the funniest markings.

Scarecrow_2011
I got a small amount of Fall decorating done Saturday while the sun was shining. This is the iron scarecrow I got at the Backwoods Festival. I had had a wooden one for years that was falling apart but this one should last me for years to come.I had to bend his poor arms up because of the small area in between the garage doors. Now he looks more fierce and like he is really trying to scare someone or maybe he just looks more funny I am not sure. LOL!

Elderberries_Spider
The birds are busy eating the Elderberries that are growing along the woods. I guess this spider thought it was a good place to set up a web but it may become the lunch if it is not careful.

 Gloriosa_Lily
I found another flower that I can add to the “I tried it and now I am over it” list. This Gloriosa Rothchildiana Lily just did not make the grade for me but maybe it will look better next year since this has been an awful year to have container plants around here.

HornedTomatoWorm
Speaking of container plants, my tomatoes did not do so well either this summer so when I spotted this Tomato Hornworm eating the leaves I just told it to eat its fill. LOL!

Horned_ToamtoWorm Have you ever watched the jaws on these worms? They are munching machines! LOL! They are much prettier as big green moths.

Cleome_Pinks2
I noticed the Cleome blooms were setting on some seed pods that I can collect and save for next year.

SweetAutumn2_Clematis
The Sweet Autumn clematis is now in full bloom.

One thing about all of the rain we have had is that I have not had to water in the new plantings so far.

Monarda_JacobCline
Over the weekend I managed to get a new Monarda Jacob Cline planted.

Daylily_ChicagoApache A new daylily Chicago Apache was planted. I love daylilies and have several ordered to plant this Fall.
Plus a couple of new Echinacea’s and I found a Red Fox veronica to replace the one that had died this summer  at Menard’s on Friday marked down to $1.99 so it got planted.
Snakeroot_JamesCompton
A new Snakeroot “James Compton” from Bluestone Perennials was also added to the new corner bed.
They are all enjoying the rain.

Cyclamen_Hardy I saw that the Hardy Cyclamen’s were starting to bloom without their leaves.

Callicarpa_PurpleBeautyBerry_Profusion
And that the Callicarpa Purple Beauty Berry “Profusion” that was planted last year has just a few berries on it this year.

MorningGlory_BluePicotee
The Blue Picotee Morning Glory is still blooming on the old fence but its leaves are yellowing…

Moonvine_Buds
And the Moon Vine has buds forming but its leaves are really yellowing since the cool, wet days have arrived. This has been the first time that I have gotten them to grow for me and I would really like to see at least one bloom before they die out.

Neon_Stonecrop The “Neon” Stonecrop has just a few blooms. It really needs a sunnier spot in the garden.

Asters_Rain The purple Asters were wet and doing their usual thing of lying on the ground.

So the blooms are fewer in the garden but plans are moving ahead for next years garden. There is even the little surprises still appearing here and there.
That is what is going on in the garden.
What is going on in your garden"? Any surprises?
Anyone want a kitten ? LOL!
Everyone Have a wonderful week and
Happy Gardening,
Lona

Backwoods Festival 2011

It was a very cool morning to attend the Backwoods Festival Friday. In the upper 40’s and overcast with a chilly wind that even the sea of people did not block out from going through you chilling you. But if you are into Crafts and Fall decor it was a paradise of eye candy.

BWF_RunForTheCrafts
We were greeted by Ohio’s  biggest Buckeye fan. She was sitting in the middle of Stone leave birdbaths and decorations for the garden. I love these stone leaved birdbaths but a little pricey for my small purse. Colorful glass plates from thrift shops were made into glass flowers of every color.

 BWF_BuckeyeFan

There was quite the rush by many to grab up a wagon full of the many Chrysanthemums that were for sale.

BWF_Mums

The Tin Man was waiting at the entrance on the path that lead down to the food booths. Kettles of beans were cooking over open fires that smelled so good.
Some of the good eating that was offered were: Vegetable Soup in Bread bowls, Sausage Gravy and biscuits, Fish, Brats, BBQ Pork which also smelled so good, Fried Green Tomatoes, Kettle corn, Apple Dumplings, Fried Buckeye’s and Carmel apples just to name a few.
I brought home some Buffalo jerky for my son hunts on occasion and likes game meat. He took it to work this morning to share with the guys.

Backwoods_Entrance

I heard a few grumbles to other men there by some husbands who were dragged along with the wives to carry things that the only reason they came was for the food. LOL! Right, like they are too macho to admit they liked to look at all of the great displays so that they could go back home and make that table or birdhouse.
Or grab up that Buckeye memorabilia or funny signs for their man cave. LOL!

BWF_Pumpkins There were wagons and tables loaded with pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, Bittersweet and small bales of straw for that Fall decorating.

BWF_Pumpkins2

BWF_Grinch
You will always find a few Grinch’s at the festival. LOL!

BWF_Snowman
And there are always booths upon booths filled with Christmas and Fall crafts. I wish I could have gotten more pictures but some booth crafters do not like people taking pictures of their crafts so I had to respect that since I use to sell crafts also years ago.

BWF_Pretty_Pumpkins These painted pumpkins were so pretty and some were really cutesy.
I liked the Acorn sign that you could get your name or message painted onto for free. I brought one of those home to make a display for the front door and an iron Scarecrow form to dress up for Fall. I will show him when I get him dressed out for his debut.

BWF_Stonehouses
These stone houses were my favorite things of the day. The gardener in me would have loved to have one for the  Fairy Garden.  They also had stone toadstools of every size and great stone troughs which were made into Fairy Gardens.

Backwoods_Festival3_2009 My daughter and I had a wonderful time spending hours looking at everything that was offered this year. Finally the sun decided to come out as we were heading out of the Festival.
We had some other chores to run before heading home.
We were greeted by these gorgeous rays shining through the clouds as the sun set on the hills as we neared home.

Sunset_Dark There is always sunshine beyond the clouds of life and a promise of a new day.

Everyone have a wonderful weekend and
Happy Gardening,
Lona
